Chamonix, located in Haute-Savoie, is one of the most famous winter resorts not only in the Mont Blanc region but in all of France. It's a true "skiing mecca!" Situated at an altitude of 1,010 meters, the resort is nestled in the picturesque Arve Valley. It combines optimal infrastructure for avid skiers with excellent conditions for a relaxing holiday—Chamonix will appeal even to those who aren't ready to spend days on the slopes. This makes the resort ideal for family vacations or large groups of friends whose winter sports passions vary.

Trails and slopes

The Chamonix resort boasts 106 pistes with elevation gains ranging from 1,008 to 3,300 meters. 49 lifts and six funiculars serve the resort's pistes. The total length of all skiable areas is 170 km, with the longest run from the summit of the Aiguille du Midi stretching 22 km! There are pistes suitable for beginners, intermediates, and experienced snowboarders and skiers. Beginners are recommended to explore the Les Houches area, home to numerous green and blue runs. Experienced skiers should explore Le Grand Morte and the challenging Le Tour-Vallorcine-Col de Balme area, where one of the black runs ends in Switzerland.

Entertainment: active recreation and attractions

Chamonix, of course, offers more than just snow-covered slopes; it also boasts incredible mountain scenery. Therefore, the resort attracts tourists who aren't particularly keen on winter sports but enjoy a more contemplative, natural setting. One of the most popular local attractions is the Eagle's Nest—this peak (2,372 m) can be reached by the beautiful Montenèvre railway or, even more atmospherically, by the Mont Blanc tram.

More extreme experiences include helicopter tours that depart from Chamonix-Argentière and fly over Mont Blanc, as well as the breathtaking observation deck on the Puque du Midi, whose walls and floor are made of glass—it's nicknamed "Step into the Void," as almost a thousand meters of drop opens beneath your feet. The Luge Alpine Coaster roller coaster also provides an adrenaline rush: 1,300 meters of jumps, turns, and breakneck speed.

Chamonix also hosts cultural events: for example, every spring there is a music festival featuring electronic music stars.

Local cuisine

Chamonix boasts a plentiful selection of restaurants and cafes, offering something to suit everyone's budget and preferences, and you can choose a different location for lunch and dinner each time. The largest concentration of establishments is in the large pedestrian area in the center of Chamonix. Also noteworthy is the restaurant with stunning panoramic views at the Aiguille du Midi top station, which serves French and Italian dishes.

How to get there

Geneva Airport is about an hour's drive from Chamonix, and buses run to the resort from there. Turin, Lyon, and Chambery airports are also located 140 to 220 kilometers from the resort.
